My pregnant partner Desha who serves on the Board of Directors for the Walnut Avenue Women’s Center has signed up to participate in a fundraising walkathon known as the Human Race to raise funds for the Center. I’m real proud of my wife for her involvement in the cause of women’s rights and services. She’s my inspiration with all her passion in this type of work.

Passing of a great Micronesian role model

I join my fellow Micronesians in mourning the death of one of our founding fathers, the late Chief Justice Andon Amaraich who  passed away on January 26, 2010 at Straub Hospital in Honolulu. Amafel Amaraich was one of the founding fathers of our nation who came from one of the small outer islands in the Mortlocks. Most notable during his long career in public service was his leadership in the negotiation of our treaty called the Compact of Free Association with the U.S., and his personal involvement in drafting the FSM Constitution. He also left his mark on the global community as the first Secretary of the FSM Department of External Affairs before his appointment to the FSM Supreme Court. At a time when Chuuk suffers from seemingly endless negativity, the life and legacy of this great man and public servant shall stand forever as our inspiration.

Today marks the end to Santa Clara University’s own “Ode to Joy” in what has been a long year of assault on international education by certain parts of the University community. This funny video translation of Schiller’s lyrics describing the ecstatic vision of an international brotherhood of man which Beethoven made famous by setting it to music, aptly describes this assault.
